Look at it in light of the definitions. You market through some form of advertising or promotion to a lot of people. You network by supporting and sharing with like-minded people in an effort to identify those who are looking for what you are promoting. You form relationships with them and, when the time is right, offer your product or service and make the connection between seller and buyer.

There are, of course, a few glaring issues in this process.

First, it's easy to seem fake. In fact, it's easy to be fake. After all, if your ultimate goal is to sell somebody something, are you being totally up front to be their friend on Facebook or follow them on Twitter.

Here are three suggestions for getting past that issue: be yourself, help people and form genuine relationships. If you do that, you won't seem fake, because you won't be fake.

The second problem in following this strategy is that it can take a lot of time. If you're friends with hundreds of people on Facebook or following thousands on Twitter, how do you find the people who are looking for you?

Here's my advice: set a time limit. Go on the social networking sites for 30 minutes every morning or 45 minutes every afternoon, but hold yourself to it. Spend the rest of your time interacting with people on your blog or website and on other marketing efforts.
